During the 1960's a sand
and gravel business was operated from the area behind the current
Lockhouse. A pit was dug for the removal of the gravel by 'Brush
Aggregates Ltd', and loaded on to coasters by a large crane at
'Herring Point'. It should be noted here that the name 'Herring
Point' has no relevance to the fish of the same name. The residence
nearby of Heybridge Hall was occupied for many years by the Reverend
Herring. Brush Aggregates also operated from the wharf by the
Fullbridge in Maldon, which for many years has been known as
'Brush's Wharf'. |
