It is not known
when he came to Heybridge Basin but he lived and operated from
there from at least 1848 until about 1870. His businesses of
Ship Owner, Shipping Agent, Coal Merchant, Marine Store. His
premises were the Granary by the canal which he used as a store,
most of the land which became May & Butchers, the Barn and
adjacent building which is now the 'Barn House' which was a 'Smithy',
the land opposite the 'Exchange' which he used as a coal yard,
and the 'Chelmer Brig' beerhouse. |

Coal Wharves
Joseph Going had two wharves, where he unloaded coal from his
ships, and stored and sold it: Going's Wharf at Heybridge: immediately
NW of Wave Bridge, where The Street crosses the canal; owned
by Joseph by 1862. Going's Wharf at Springfield: just north of
the pool at the head of the Chelmer Canal; owned by Joseph by
1851 until at least 1862. |
