The
Chapel & Reading Room |
|
Originaly built and owned
by John Sadd in 1834 |
|
Under the care and control
of Mrs Chilcot throughout the 1970's - 1990's. |
|
In the early part of the
19th Century John Sadd owned land in the area on both sides of
the Basin Road some of which was auctioned off in 1873, but in
1834 John Sadd constructed a wooden building for the use of the
villagers as a community Chapel of worship, in 1867 Sadd donated
ownership of the Chapel to the local Church. This included another
building which was added shortly after the first as a community
hall, laterly known as 'the reading room'. Like any other village
community hall it was used for everything from club and association
meetings to a teaching facility. During the late 1970's a serious
amount of deterioration was noticed and parts of the floor were
rendering it unusable. The situation was temporarily resolved,
when a a group of the village children undertook a successfull
scheme to raise money for new flooring. |
