 Muckers Island

Over the sea-wall past the 'Jolly Sailor'. began what was once the pile of spoil deposited from digging out the lock. At first it was an island, then a small bridge built to it, and finally a filled in area connecting it directly with the sea-wall. After many years of occupation by 'Mucker' and 'Dinee' Clarke, it took on the name by locals of 'Muckers Island', and their home was referred to as 'Rat Hall'. It was ultimately developed first as tea-rooms then for boatbuilding and stores. For many years a rack with a battery of about ten punt guns was kept in front of 'Rat Hall'.
