Polden |
|
A descendant of the Stebbens
family from his mother Ivy, daughter of Charley Stebbens. Tom,
a larger than life character in village life during the 1960's,
70's and early 80's. Originally worked for Emney at the Blacksmith's
in Goldhanger before starting up on his own as a general engineer,
at first mobile and then from premises on a farm not far from
the village. Owned an ex 52ft Naval Pinnace called 'Locker' which
he used a great deal for pleasure at week-ends and holidays locally
on the Blackwater, with many residents and visitors. Tom later
replaced the 'Locker' with the French Crabber 'Rolande Sonia'.
He was heavily involved in most village events during the aforementioned
period. Was founder of the November 5th Fireworks event, and
one of the founders of the newly introduced 'Basin Regatta' in
1977. Tom's wife Sue is a recognised marine artist. |
