He was already residing in the
area operating a salt-pan business before the canal was built.
He became the first person in charge of the lock, harbourmaster
and collector of tolls. He was also landlord of the first pub
in the village the 'Chelmer Brig'. His son carried on as a coal
merchant in Basin Road. |
